Shutterbug is the Bees Knees

Shutterbug is the Bees Knees

Lights! Camera! Action! Shutterbug is a brand new picture book that will whisk you back in time to the days of old Hollywoodland! Everything about Shutterbug has an old Hollywood feel to it…from the old-fashioned phrases to the black and white illustrations you will feel transported to old Tinseltown!

Shutterbug by Merry Gordon is a story about Don and his lightning bug who are down on their luck in La La Land. One day their luck changes when they happen upon an old camera and begin snapping photos of the young and glitzy stars and starlets of Hollywoodland. Can their luck last when even Tinseltown is hit with hard times?

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed this book. It just screamed “Old Hollywood” to me! I was immediately drawn into the book by the black and white illustrations provided by artist Eddie Gordon. The book is set in the 1930’s and the black and white illustrations were a perfect fit. It really just transported you back in time to Old Hollywood!

I also really loved the addition of the old words and phrases. Is there any better term than “The Bees Knees”? I think not! Having the words in bold and having a glossary at the end was such a wonderful touch. Even though I had heard most of these terms before, I definitely needed a little help in remembering what everything meant! I think parents reading this with children will also appreciate the glossary!

Shutterbug would be a great addition to a lesson on the 1930’s or the Great Depression. It ties in perfectly!

Summer: My New Favorite Book to Teach Kindness

Summer: My New Favorite Book to Teach Kindness

“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”- Aesop

Friends, have I got a wonderful new book for you. Teachers, homeschool families, parents…this is a book you are going to want to read with your kiddos. Summer, is a new release from Author Cao Wenxuan and illustrator Yu Rong. The message conveyed in this book is so powerful. Summer teaches of the importance of kindness, sharing, and being selfless. It not only delivers a powerful message, but it does so with beautiful words and charming illustrations!

Summer

It is summertime in the grasslands and the animals are desperate for a break from the scorching sun. Just when they think they will never find relief from the heat, they spot a tree. A single tree with a single patch of leaves to seek shelter under. The animals begin to fight and argue and all claim that it is their spot. They are only looking out for themselves and show no compassion for each other. It isn’t until the animals witness a and sweet and loving act of kindness that they realize that they could solve all of their problems if they just showed each other kindness and compassion. I won’t reveal how they solved their problem but is extremely heartwarming!

The words are beautifully written by Wenxuan and we fell in love with the bright illustrations by Rong. The colors in the book truly make you feel like you are in the middle of a hot summer day! Our favorite part is in the middle of the book when the pages are cut and grow from shorter to longer. The pages illustrate each act of kindness and it is such a lovely representation!

I truly believe that picture books are such an amazing way to share important messages with kids…and adults! Summer is a book that is full of important messages…not only about kindness and about sharing but also about looking out for each other and teamwork. Such a great addition to a classroom or home library. There is always room for more books about kindness!
